Fall Arts Preview: A genteel season

A much-touted exhibition of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany arrives at Carnegie Museum of Art Oct. 14, continuing a genteel fall season that also includes Pre-Raphaelite art at The Frick Art & Historical Center followed by the women of Homer, Chase and Sargent and Minerva Chapman miniatures.

Barbara Freed's popular film about Matisse is back for a Sept. 20 screening at the Carnegie, and Matthew Barney's latest (with Bjork), "Drawing Restraint 9," is at Pittsburgh Filmmakers Friday through Sept. 20

Tossing things up a bit are two exhibitions with Glenn Ligon at The Andy Warhol Museum and the Mattress Factory's "Factory Installed."

The opening reception for Artist of the Year Jane Haskell, and Emerging Artist Kim Beck, is Friday night at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Local artists shine again at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art's Biennial, opening Sept. 17, and when the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Annual returns to the Carnegie Oct. 27.

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART

The major fall exhibition is "Louis Comfort Tiffany: Artist for the Ages" -- more than 120 objects including lamps, mosaics, windows, pottery, furniture, paintings and jewelry -- which opens Oct. 14 (curator's talk at 1 p.m.) and remains through Jan. 15. "Distinctive Desk Sets: Useful Ornament from Tiffany Studios" complements the exhibition, through April 29. The museum's "The Thousand and One Nights," by Henri Matisse, is exhibited through Nov. 22 in conjunction with the Sept. 20 screening of "A Model for Matisse: The Story of the Vence Chapel" by CMU Professor Barbara Freed, who will also speak. The Heinz Architectural Center presents "Connections: The West End Pedestrian Bridge Competition," Sept. 22-Dec. 10. The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Annual opens its 97th show Oct. 27, through Jan. 15. "Rembrandt's Great Subjects: Prints from the Collection" comes to the Works on Paper Gallery Nov. 4 (through Feb. 11). In the Forum Gallery, "Forum 57: Luisa Lambri and Ernesto Neto," organized by 2008 Carnegie International curator Douglas Fogle, affords an early look at his interests (through Nov. 12), and is followed by "Forum 58: Jonathan Borofsky (Nov. 18-Feb. 18). The Neapolitan Presepio arrives for the Christmas season, Nov. 24 -- Jan. 7. (412-622-3131.)

THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM

The PBS special "Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film," which airs Sept 20 and 21, will be screened at the museum from 7-11 p.m. Monday preceded by a "pretzel reception" ($20 admission benefits museum programming). A major exhibition of the works of Glenn Ligon, "Some Changes," will open Sept. 29 with a 6 p.m. discussion with the artist and Warhol director Tom Sokolowski, followed by a reception until 9 p.m. The exhibition and one curated by Ligon, "Have Another Piece," continue through Dec. 31. Works by co-founder and director of Squonk Opera Steve O'Hearn will be exhibited Sept. 30-Dec. 31. "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race," an exploration of the eugenics theory as applied to the Holocaust and organized by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, opens Dec. 16 and continues through March 18. THE FRICK ART MUSEUM

"Waking Dreams: The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites from the Delaware Art Museum" continues through Oct. 8. Affiliated programs include gallery talks at 2 p.m. Friday , Sept. 22 and Sept. 29 on, respectively, "Dante Gabriel Rossetti," "Tales of Arthur" and "Stunner, Elizabeth Siddal" (fee); a free film on William Morris, "Topsy," at noon Sept. 20; and a Sept. 24 lecture on "Architectural Glass in Pittsburgh" (fee). Oct. 15 WQED's Rick Sebak talks about "Making Slightly Wacky Documentaries" (fee). Opening Nov. 4 are "Off the Pedestal: New Women in the Art of Homer, Chase, and Sargent" and "Minerva Chapman: Miniature Portraits" (through Jan. 14.) (412-371-0600)

MATTRESS FACTORY

The second "Factory Installed" -- works by Nick Cave, Dan Steinhilber, Deborah Aschheim, and Jesse Bercowetz & Matt Bua -- runs through Jan. 28. Ruth Stanford's "In the Dwelling-House" continues through Oct. 22 (open weekends). "The Tom Museum," a "living museum of puppets, sculptures, paintings and art experiments" at 410 Sampsonia Way, continues through early 2007, and another edition of the "Gestures" exhibition series is planned for the fall. PITTSBURGH FILMMAKERS

"Reflections," black and white photographs by Jason Vartiker-McCulough, and "Peregrination," work by students in the Advanced Photography Seminar, continue through Oct. 1. Opening Oct. 13 are "Photographs by Jill Larson" and the American Society of Media Photographers' annual object show (this year, "twelve"), through Nov. 26. (412-681-5449.)

PITTSBURGH CENTER FOR THE ARTS

The opening reception for Artist of the Year Jane Haskell and Emerging Artist of the Year Kim Beck will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday ($5) with the exhibitions continuing through Nov. 5. Haskell and Beck will speak at 6 p.m. Oct. 19. A related symposium on the importance, meaning and use of light in visual arts will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 7 ($10, students $2, reservations recommended). Opening Nov. 16, in addition to the annual Holiday Sale, are exhibitions by Ron Donoughe, Bruce Woyt, Carol Brode and Kathleen Dlugos, Robert Dunn and the Pittsburgh Print Group (through January 21). SOCIETY FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

"Nature/Culture: Artists Respond to Their Environment" continues through Nov. 11. Political and social commentary enlivens "Bridge 9: Arthur Hash, Jon Eric Riis and Patti Warashina," opening Nov. 24 and running through March 24. At the One Mellon Center satellite gallery fiber works by Beth Barron and Lewis Knauss hang until Oct. 1. (412-261-7003.)

WOOD STREET GALLERIES

"Ultra-Nature: Work by Miguel Chevalier," a virtual garden making its U.S. debut, opens Nov. 17 (through Dec. 31). (412-471-5605.)

SPACE

"In To My Self" features work by Lori Felker, Eric Fleischauer, Wes Kline, Jesse McLean, Ayanah Moor, Shaun Slifer and Steve Summers through Oct. 21. Keny Marshall's "Apophenia" follows Nov. 11 to Dec. 31. (412-325-7723.)

PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST

Other than Wood Street and SPACE, the Trust operates galleries at 707 and 709 Penn Avenue. Artists who'll exhibit this season include David Aschkenas, Francis Crisafio, Laurie Lundin, Sarah Beitler, Ruth McCormick and Anire Mosely. The Trust sponsors a Gallery Crawl from 5:30-9 p.m. Sept. 29.

THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL GALLERY

The Women of Visions group exhibition, "In Our House: Interpretations of African American Culture," continues through Oct. 21. Pittsburgh fiber artist Rise Nagin exhibits recent work in a solo show Nov. 10 through Jan. 19. (412-281-8723.)

SILVER EYE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

"It's a Dog's Life: Photographs by William Wegman from the Polaroid Collection" brings the famed Weimaraners to Carson Street, remaining through Nov. 4. Events include a gallery talk on Wegman Sept. 29 ($10) and screening of his videos Oct. 11 ($5). At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 local photographers look back at Steelermania 2006 (free). "Fellowship 2006," juried by the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, runs Nov. 15 through Feb. 10. (412-431-1810.)

THE PITTSBURGH GLASS CENTER

The annual "Meltdown" benefit gala, from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, features a murrine glassblowing demonstration by Stephen Rolfe Powell, party foods and an auction ($200). Artists Hilary Harp and Suzie Silver install a glass and video "Nebula," opening 6-9 p.m. Oct. 6, through Jan. 5. (412-365-2145, ext. 207.)

ARTISTS IMAGE RESOURCE

The North Side organization and gallery is celebrating its first decade this year with special presentations of its portfolio projects, tours of the new shop facilities, Birthday Bashes (4 p.m. to midnight Oct. 14 and Nov. 18) and Last Friday Celebrations (7-9 p.m. Sept. 29, Oct. 27 and Dec. 29). Patricia Villalobos-Echeverria's solo exhibition "aflujo/afflux" continues through Sept. 30. (412-321-8664.)

MANCHESTER CRAFTSMEN'S GUILD

Founder and CEO Bill Strickland will show "Collected Works in Clay," an exhibition of more than 40 functional objects that is also a silent auction to benefit the Guild's Youth & Arts programs. AMERICAN JEWISH MUSEUM

REGINA GOUGER MILLER GALLERY

Having opened last month, "Joyce Kozloff: Exterior and Interior Cartographies" continues through Oct. 15. Kozloff and artist Ann Messner will speak on "Disarming Images," political unrest and role of the activist artist, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the gallery. (At CMU, 412-268-3618.)

HUNT INSTITUTE FOR BOTANICAL DOCUMENTATION

"What We Collect: Recent Art Acquisitions" exhibits 80 recently acquired artworks dating from the 17th century to the present, today through Dec. 20. (At CMU, 412-268-2434.)

UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

"From Pavement to Paradise: The Evolution of Schenley Plaza," opens from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday and continues through Oct. 21. Affiliated talks address subjects as varied as the genetic diversity of the plaza's London Plane trees (Sept. 21) and local geology as interpreted by the late folk artist John Kane (Oct. 5). A walking tour of the plaza will be given Oct. 7. "Resounding Spirit: Japanese Contemporary Art of the 1960s" follows, Oct. 30 through Dec. 9. (At Pitt; 412-648-2423.

WESTMORELAND MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

"The Westmoreland Juried Biennial," spotlighting regional artists, opens with a free public reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, continuing through Oct. 15. The annual "Holiday Toy and Train Exhibition" rounds out the year beginning Nov. 19. (221 N. Main St., Greensburg; 724-837-1500.)

SAINT VINCENT GALLERY

SOUTHERN ALLEGHENIES MUSEUM OF ART

"Artists of the Commonwealth: Realism and its Response in Pennsylvania Painting, 1900-1950" continues through Nov. 5 at Loretto, followed Nov. 17 to Feb. 4 by "Biennial 2006," highlighting local artists (1-814-472-3920). At Ligonier Valley, "Ansel Adams: A Legacy" runs through Nov. 19. THE BUTLER INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN ART

McDONOUGH MUSEUM OF ART

CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART

ARTISTS TO WATCH FOR

Aaronel de Roy Gruber, whose photographs of "Light and Transparency" are exhibited at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Friday through Nov. 17. (412-622-6914.)

"Kamal Youssef -- An Artist's Journey," a retrospective of the Egyptian-born artist's painting and sculpture from the 1930s to the present, at The University Museum, IUP, Sept. 23 through Dec. 9. (724-357-7930.)

EXHIBITIONS TO WATCH FOR

"Marie Kelly & Al Blumberg: A Retrospetive" at Panza Frame & Gallery, Millvale, opening 6-9 p.m. Sept. 23, with James Shipman and Al Blumberg Jr., speaking about the late artists Sept. 30. (412-821-0959.)

The first exhibition in The Clay Place's new Carnegie location, "40 Under 40," comprises 40 ceramic works by 40 artists under 40 years of age. It opens from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 29 and continues through Nov. 25. (412-276-3260.)
