Ravenstahl slated as Letterman guest
Tuesday, September 12, 2006

New Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who may be the youngest mayor of a major American city, is to be a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman this week.

The Web site of the CBS show lists Mr. Ravenstahl on Thursday's guest list along with the legendary rock band The Who, which is one of the oldest of the surviving 1960s-era bands.

Mr. Ravenstahl, sworn in this month after the death of Bob O'Connor, was the subject of a front-page article in the New York Times on Saturday.

He wouldn't be the first Pittsburgh mayor to get the late-night treatment. Sophie Masloff appeared on "The Pat Sajak Show" on CBS in 1989, partly because of the attention she was receiving for ascending to the mayor's office in her 70s after the death of Richard Caliguiri.

Mrs. Masloff also was the subject of a New York Times story, which noted her penchant for mangling the names of rock acts. Bruce Springsteen became Bruce Bedspring, the Grateful Dead became the Dreadful Dead and The Who (are you paying attention, Mr. Ravenstahl?) became The How.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
