There's little doubt about Ohio State after a convincing victory in the 1 vs. 2 showdown with Texas.
The Buckeyes were No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 released yesterday, tightening their hold on the top spot the day after beating the defending champion Longhorns, 24-7.
Ohio State received 59 of a possible 65 first-place votes, up from 39 last week, and 1,614 points in the media poll. Notre Dame is back at No. 2 after its 41-17 victory against Penn State. The Fighting Irish slipped two spots last week when Texas moved up to No. 2.
Notre Dame received three first-place votes. No. 3 Auburn got two first-place votes and Southern California had two first-place votes is just one point behind the Tigers.
No. 5 West Virginia also received two first-place votes.
The Longhorns slipped to No. 8 after having their 21-game winning streak stopped by the Buckeyes. The Longhorns' ranking is their lowest since they were No. 8 Oct. 24, 2004.
More Ohio State
A student was accused of driving his car into a battalion fire chief, a school official and his wife -- injuring them slightly -- during a raucous celebration after the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes' win against No. 2 Texas Saturday night. The driver was among 17 people arrested, five of them on arson charges. There were about 40 fires reported, with couches and mattresses set ablaze, in student neighborhoods.
Tennessee
Cornerback Inky Johnson remained in a hospital yesterday after he was carted off the field in the game against Air Force. Coach Phillip Fulmer said Johnson had a shoulder injury but declined to discuss the exact nature of the injury. Johnson appeared to hit helmets Saturday with Air Force's Justin Handley after a catch. He was on the ground for several minutes but could be seen moving his arms and legs. Fulmer said he was temporarily unconscious. Tennessee also lost defensive tackle Justin Harrell to a left biceps injury. Johnson and Harrell will miss the game Saturday against No. 7 Florida.
Georgia
Quarterback Joe Tereshinski will be out four to six weeks with an injured ankle, opening the door for freshman Matthew Stafford to become the starter. Coach Mark Richt said Tereshinski has a high ankle sprain. No. 10 Georgia plays UAB on Saturday. Joe Cox will be the backup.
Chadron
The party has moved from Bozeman, Mont., to Chadron, Neb. Division II Chadron State made Montana State's worst fear a reality Saturday when the Eagles stunned the Bobcats, 35-24, on the road. A week ago, I-AA Montana State was celebrating a 19-10 victory against defending Big 12 North champion Colorado that created a buzz throughout college football. "Everyone is saying they want Colorado to beat the Huskers, and then we would be the best team in Nebraska," Chadron quarterback Joe McLain said.
