Big Ten Roundup: Purdue prevails in overtime, 38-31

Kory Sheets scored four touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, as Purdue beat Miami (Ohio), 38-31, yesterday.

Sheets scored his final touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run in Purdue's only overtime possession, giving the Boilermakers the seven-point lead. Miami got to the Purdue 8 on its overtime possession, but Purdue's defense held.

Sheets, a sophomore, had 14 carries for 60 yards. He has seven scores in two games.

Dorien Bryant added 74 receiving yards and 62 rushing yards for Purdue (2-0). Curtis Painter passed for 206 yards for the Boilermakers.

With the score tied, 31-31, Purdue took possession with 1:52 left in regulation. But Miami's Joey Hudson picked off an underthrown pass by Painter and ran it back to the Purdue 31, setting up Nathan Parseghian's field goal attempt with 17 seconds left. But Purdue defensive end Anthony Spencer blocked the potential game-winning kick.

Mike Kokal passed for 378 yards and four touchdowns, and Ryne Robinson caught nine passes for 162 yards and two scores for Miami (0-2).

Purdue led 10-3 at halftime. But Miami marched 71 yards on its opening possession of the second half, and Kokal's 2-yard touchdown pass to Jake O'Connell tied the game at 10.

Purdue responded with a 10-play scoring drive in which Sheets had a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Boilermakers a 17-10 lead with 9:12 left in the third quarter.

Miami's Kokal found Dustin Woods open behind the defense for a 52-yard touchdown pass to tie the score, 17-17, with 3:42 left in the third quarter.

Sheets scored his third touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 10-yard run on an option pitch that gave Purdue a 24-17 lead. But Miami came right back as Kokal threw his third touchdown pass of the game, a 7-yarder to Ryne Robinson, to tie the score.

Sheets returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, Painter faked end-arounds to two of his teammates, then found Greg Orton open for a 43-yard touchdown pass to give Purdue a 31-24 lead.

Other games

Michigan 41, Eastern Michigan 17: Mike Hart ran for 116 yards and matched a career high with three touchdowns, leading No. 10 Michigan to the home victory. Even though the score was lopsided, the Wolverines (2-0) did not look impressive in the tuneup before playing at No. 4 Notre Dame. Dan LeFevour threw for 153 yards and two scores and two turnovers for the Chippewas (0-2).

New Hampshire 34, Northwestern 17: Ricky Santos scored three touchdowns and passed to David Ball for two more, sending Division I-AA New Hampshire (1-0) to the win. Northwestern (1-1) was playing its first home game since the death of coach Randy Walker from a heart attack June 29 and honored the coach throughout the day. The Wildcats were unable to stop New Hampshire, ranked No. 2 in the I-AA poll.

California 42, Minnesota 17: DeSean Jackson caught three of Nate Longshore's four touchdown passes in the first half, and No. 22 California (1-1) rebounded impressively from last week's season-opening loss with a home win against Minnesota (1-1). Marshawn Lynch rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, and Jackson caught seven passes for 114 yards for California.

Michigan State 52, Eastern Michigan 20: Matt Trannon set a school-record with 14 catches and Drew Stanton accounted for five touchdowns as Michigan State (2-0) beat visiting Eastern Michigan (0-2). Trannon had 151 yards receiving, caught two touchdowns and threw a 35-yard scoring pass to A.J. Jimmerson. Stanton threw three touchdown passes. .

Wisconsin 34, Western Illinois 10: P.J. Hill conjured up memories of former Badgers bruiser Ron Dayne for the second consecutive week, bouncing off defenders on his way to 101 yards and three touchdowns as Wisconsin beat visiting Division I-AA Western Illinois. Wisconsin senior quarterback John Stocco was 15 for 25 for 227 yards.

Indiana 24, Ball State 23: Third-string quarterback Kellen Lewis rallied Indiana for two-second half touchdowns and Austin Starr made a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Hoosiers (2-0) the victory at Ball State (1-1).
