The salute began with a horse-drawn hearse transporting the mayor's body through the tree-lined streets of Shadyside and Oakland to St. Paul Cathedral, where mourners overflowed from the church and into the streets.
The mayor's sons, his daughter, his wife, Archbishop Donald Wuerl and many others shared memories of Mr. O'Connor. A brief rendition of "The Steelers Polka" even echoed from the cathedral walls.
Pittsburgher had a last chance to wave goodbye as the mayor's hearse was escorted through city neighborhoods to Mr. O'Connor's final resting place, a plot overlooking the neighborhood where he grew up at Calvary Cemetery.
