The funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow after the mayor's casket is taken to the church by a caisson from the nearby John A. Freyvogel Sons Funeral Home. The mayor died Friday after a two-month battle with cancer.
Details released yesterday by the city call for temporary closures and parking restrictions on numerous streets, including Craig Street and Fifth Avenue. After Mass, the casket will be placed in a motorized hearse and then proceed along several spots chosen for their significance to Mr. O'Connor.
The procession, which will end at Calvary Cemetery, will pass the City-County Building on Grant Street, and later move past St. Rosalia Church, the Schenley Golf Course and the business corridor of Squirrel Hill. Calvary Cemetery is also the burial site for former Pittsburgh Mayors David Lawrence and Richard Caliguiri.
People are welcome to gather on the sidewalk and watch the procession, said Anna Dobkin, VisitPittsburgh's corporate marketing director.
"There weren't any logistical problems," she said. "It was just a matter of making sure this happened correctly, with dignity."
The horse-drawn carriage is on loan for the procession from the Burton Funeral Home in Erie.
At St. Paul, seats will be reserved for the mayor's family, elected officials and deacons. Remaining seats are open to the public, and speakers will be set up outside the church for those unable to find a spot within the building. Additional seating and a broadcast of the Mass will also be available in a hall adjacent to St. Paul.
Starting at roughly 10:30 a.m. -- the time at which the procession is expected to leave the funeral home -- parts of Devonshire and Bayard streets will be closed. Starting at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until the procession leaves St. Paul, parts of Craig Street and Fifth Avenue will be closed. Rolling street closures will affect other streets on the route: among them, Grant Street, Greenfield Avenue and Beechwood Boulevard.
Visitors paying their respects at Freyvogel's lined up well before the noon opening yesterday. Visitation at the funeral home, 4900 Centre Ave., Oakland, continues from noon to 8 p.m. today.
