PHILADELPHIA -- The son of a state lawmaker remained missing yesterday, more than three days after he was reported abducted, and no ransom demand has been made, according to police and the legislator's spokeswoman.
Police said the kidnapping of Shamari Taylor, 26, on Saturday is connected to a weekend home invasion robbery in which Mr. Taylor's mother and sister were shot. Mr. Taylor is the son of Rep. John Myers, D-Philadelphia.
Mr. Myers was surprised by news media reports that his son might have been delivering drugs when he was abducted, spokeswoman Thera Martin said yesterday.
"He's heard it on the television reports and read it in the papers," Ms. Martin said. "This stuff ... is news to him."
She described Mr. Taylor as "a clean-cut young man who worked hard for most of his young adult life." She also said he has no criminal record. Police would not comment yesterday on that assertion.
Mr. Taylor and a female companion were reportedly kidnapped from her parked vehicle late Saturday by a group of men using a van and three cars, police said.
The woman said she was released Sunday at about 5 a.m. and called police 12 hours later. Around 7 p.m., two intruders apparently used Mr. Taylor's keys to enter the home where he lived with his mother and sister, police said.
The intruders shot the women and rummaged through Mr. Taylor's bedroom, leaving with $5,000 to $10,000 in cash, police said. Authorities have said Mr. Taylor was unemployed.
Mr. Taylor's sister has already been released from the hospital. His mother was in fair condition yesterday. Police said the two women were not involved in criminal activity.
Mr. Taylor is Mr. Myers' son from a previous relationship. Mr. Myers has been married to his wife, Joyce, for more than 20 years.
Mr. Taylor's relatives on Tuesday announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to his return.
Mr. Myers, a vocal gun-control advocate at the Statehouse, has represented the East Germantown section of the city since 1995.
