On 100th birthday, bingo player matched her age
Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Charlott Moore Boggs loves to read and play bingo. On Aug. 11, her lucky number was 100 -- her age that day.

More than 50 friends and family members from around the country celebrated with her on her birthday at her home, Concordia Lund Care Center Assisted Living in Cabot, Butler County.

Mrs. Boggs grew up in Ben Avon and on Dec. 8, 1928, wed Murray W. Boggs at a family member's house there. They had two children: Murray of Orlando, Fla., and Richard of Kittanning. She also has six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Boggs retired in 1992 after being a caretaker for a local doctor, John Witherspoon. She lived in Avalon for many years before moving to Concordia 14 years ago.

Not just a numbers-cruncher

M. Whitney Greene has dealt with numbers his whole life. Although he turned 100 on Aug. 21, he still balances his own checkbook.

But there's another side to the man whose first name is a family secret. (His daughters will say only that it shows his mother's love of the classics.)

At Friendship Village of the South Hills in Upper St. Clair, Mr. Greene enjoys reading, watching tennis on TV and participating in yoga, musicals and lectures. He knows there's much more to life than numbers.

"I remember my mother being dismayed when my dad took me out of school to go to Forbes Field for the Pirates' opener. It's one of my dearest memories," said his younger daughter, Judith Villwock of Hobe Sound, Fla.

He was born in Cold Springs, N.Y., to Joseph A. and Carolyn Wygant Greene. He received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

He married Mildred Lescarboura, a published author and a leader in the Episcopal church. Their other daughter is Kelle Estes of Edgewood. Together with Mrs. Greene, who died in December 2005, he has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He worked at Standard & Poor's until the outbreak of World War II, when he became assistant manager of the War Production Board in Washington, D.C. He was later an economist in the U.S. Department of Commerce. He came to Pittsburgh to work for Koppers Co., and retired as manager of economic research. He worked with Marketing Service Associates until 1992.

Mr. Greene has volunteered with Service Corps of Retired Executives and Retired Executive Volunteer Service. He was president of the American Marketing Association's Pittsburgh Chapter, the Pittsburgh Economics Club and the Harvard Business School Club of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Harvard-Yale-Princeton Club of Pittsburgh and Trinity Cathedral, serving on committees and as a lector.

A party was held on his birthday at Friendship Village with family, friends and other residents.
