Here's a list of some of the people, places and things the school year is expected to bring:

Allegheny Valley

Starting date: Aug. 28

Estimated enrollment: 1,185

What's new? The district is moving into the final stages of a $5.7 million renovation project at Acmetonia Primary School, which includes changes to the entrance and parking area.

Computer labs have been upgraded.

Five teachers are replacing retirees at Springdale Junior-Senior High School, and several teachers are joining the staff at Colfax Upper Elementary School.

Aquinas Academy

What's new? The school will break ground on a gymnasium/multipurpose facility this year, a project that follows last year's creation of new high school classrooms on the pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade campus in Hampton.

Quaker Valley

What's new? After attending the former Anthony Wayne Elementary School in Ambridge last year, Edgeworth Elementary pupils will return to their renovated school. Osborne Elementary pupils will attend classes in the school in Ambridge while their building is renovated this year.

All kindergarten classes will be held at Edgeworth Elementary. The district will offer an extended-day kindergarten from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Heidi Ondek, former high school principal, is assistant superintendent. Other new staff includes one high school teacher and one middle school teacher. The search for a superintendent and high school principal continue.

What's new? District architects are working on final designs for a $36 million renovation project at the high school and middle school. Officials this year will start implementing changes to curriculum and grade structures to prepare for when the renovations are completed in 2008. At that time, the ninth grade will move to the high school, the current middle school will house fourth through sixth grades and the elementary buildings will house kindergarten through third grade with the introduction of full-day kindergarten.

The district welcomes 60 new teachers, 55 of whom are replacing retirees. Five new teaching positions were created, and three elementary counselor positions were added for pupils in kindergarten through fourth grade.
