Nibbles: Pressley Ridge's yearly ice cream fund-raiser goes wild
Thursday, August 24, 2006

Pressley Ridge's annual ice cream bash will be a "Wild and Roaring Ice Cream Adventure" this year at a new location -- Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium -- and a new time and day -- 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Beloved of ice cream fans, the popular fund-raiser pits 10 corporate sponsors in a creative contest to concoct a Silver Scoop Trophy-winning ice cream flavor and a unique cookie to go with it.

Flavor names, such as Simba's Rainbow Pride, Lions & Tigers & Bears Fudge Pie, Sweet Safari Surprise, Lion Tamer and Strawberry Safari reflect the zoo setting.

Hagan Premium Ice Cream has donated 1,500 gallons of ice cream to the event, and Ginger Fisher, 22, used Pressley Ridge's industrial-sized ovens to bake 20,000 cookies from the sponsors' recipes.

She's the daughter of Linda and the late Ben Fisher, who was on the board at Pressley Ridge for many years.

Tickets to eat all the ice cream and cookies you can possibly fit in are $10 each or $30 for a group of four; children under 2 are free.

Do you eat 'green'?

If you want to know how much damage your diet is doing to the planet, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (aka the food police) has a Web site to show you.

Tune in to www.eatinggreen.org, take the Score your Diet quiz and find out how environmentally friendly you are.

If you eat meat, cheese, eggs or milk, it won't be good.

Whether finding out how many acres of grain were used for feed, how many pounds of fertilizer and pesticides were put into the ground or how many pounds of manure were generated will turn you into a "green" eater is doubtful, but it is an offbeat, oddly interesting approach to wooing consumers off animal products and onto vegetables and fruits.
