Tuesday, August 22, 2006

A man who robbed a pharmacy of prescription drugs at gunpoint fatally shot himself when cornered by police, state police said.

The man, fired a single shot, said Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. "Police did not fire their weapons," he said.

Police today identified him as Stephen Buzza, 22, whose last known address was in Mt. Lebanon.

The incident began at about 1 p.m. yesterday when Mr. Buzza robbed a pharmacy in Canonsburg and then fled on foot, state police said.

The man hid behind an abandoned vehicle and a resident told police the man was armed.

Police surrounded the area and asked Mr. Buzza to show his hands, state police said. Buzza refused, saying he didn't want to go back to jail and would kill himself.

Police said the man then raised his handgun and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
