Speaking Numeric: 8/20/06

Baseball is a language of numbers. Some of the more noteworthy ones from the past week:

4:45: Time of Friday's second game between the Yankees and Red Sox at Fenway Park -- the longest nine-inning game in MLB history. The Yankees won, 14-11.

9: Reno Silver Fox batters who reached base vs. Jose Canseco either by walk (5) or by getting hit with a Canseco pitch (4) in his 41/3-inning mound stint for the Long Beach Armada Wednesday in Golden Baseball League play.

14: Consecutive solo home runs by the Pirates before Jose Bautista hit a two-run shot Tuesday vs. Milwaukee. Only the San Diego Padres (15 from June 21-July 1) have a longer solo streak this season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

15: Consecutive wins for the A's vs. Seattle after beating the Mariners, 4-0, Wednesday. It matches the longest winning streak by one team vs. another since baseball went to divisional play in 1969.

25: Players used by the Cubs in their 18-inning win in Houston Tuesday -- the first time that has been done by an NL team in a non-September game since the Cardinals April 16, 1959.

56: Years since an AL rookie won his first nine decisions until the Angels' Jered Weaver went to 9-0 Friday with a 3-0 win vs. Seattle. Whitey Ford was the previous one to do it in 1950.

68: Pitches thrown by Greg Maddux in eight shutout innings vs. the Giants Aug. 13.

2020: Year to which Jason Bay would have had to play without missing a game to break Cal Ripken Jr.'s record streak of 2,632 consecutive games. Bay's streak ended at 307 when he did not play Monday vs. Milwaukee.

5,000: Major-league games worked for umpire Bruce Froemming, who reached the milestone Wednesday when he worked the plate for the Tigers-Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Only Bill Klem has worked more.
