Auto Racing Notebook: Burton secures pole at Michigan Speedway
Saturday, August 19, 2006

Jeff Burton won another pole yesterday, spoiling Elliott Sadler's debut in the Evernham Motorsports No. 19 Dodge.

Sadler, who left Robert Yates Racing to replace fired Jeremy Mayfield in the Evernham ride, was the 41st of 47 NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers who made qualifying runs on the two-mile Michigan International Speedway oval in Brooklyn, Mich.

The crowd cheered lustily as Sadler's 187.071 mph lap knocked the 186.804 of Matt Kenseth off the top spot in qualifying for the GFS Marketplace 400 tomorrow. But Burton, the 45th driver in the line, easily pushed Sadler to the outside of the front row with a lap of 187.936.

It was the fourth pole of the season and the sixth of his career for Burton.

Gilliand replaces Sadler

David Gilliland, capitalizing on his big upset in a NASCAR Busch Series race, replaced Elliott Sadler in the No. 38 Robert Yates Racing Ford and will drive tomorrow at Michigan International Speedway.

Gilliland got a good start in his new car yesterday, qualifying 26th in the 43-car field.

Martin in 2007?

Retirement apparently does not mean the same thing to Mark Martin that it does to a lot of folks.

Martin has said all year he plans to retire from the Nextel Cup series at the end of the season to concentrate on driving in the Craftsman Truck Series and maybe a few races in the Busch Series. But yesterday, while preparing for the GFS Marketplace 400, the four-time Cup runner-up changed his tune a bit.

"My primary focus is still to do the full Craftsman Truck Series schedule, and I would be very interested in an additional 10-12-race Nextel Cup schedule. We just don't know what that car would be at this point."
