Pirates lose 5-2 in extra innings
Wednesday, August 16, 2006

David Bell's bases-loaded single, his fourth hit of the game, drove in two runs in a three-run 13th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 today.

Six relievers combined to pitch seven shutout innings as the Brewers won the final two games of the three-game series after losing seven in a row in Pittsburgh over the last two seasons.

Geremi Gonzalez (4-2) pitched a scoreless 12th for the victory and Francisco Cordero finished up for his eighth save in eight opportunities since being traded by the Rangers to the Brewers on Aug. 9. Cordero has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with Milwaukee, and has pitched in all but one of the Brewers' wins since they acquired him.

Damaso Marte's wildness got him in trouble in the 12th as he lost his second game in less than 24 hours. After walking leadoff hitter Tony Graffanino, Marte (0-7) threw two wild pitches ahead of intentional walks to Bill Hall and Damian Miller. Bell's single made it 4-2 and Mike Rivera added a second RBI single.

Brewers left-hander Chris Capuano is winless in seven starts since being chosen for the NL All-Star team, but made a second consecutive strong start by giving up two runs -- one earned -- in six innings. Capuano was coming off a 2-1 loss Friday to Arizona.

Capuano had been giving up an average of nearly one home run every three innings since the break -- 11 homers in 36 1-3 innings -- but kept the ball in the park for the first time in those seven starts.

The Pirates scored on third baseman Bell's two-base error for misplaying Chris Duffy's grounder, Jose Hernandez's force-play grounder in the second and Xavier Nady's RBI single in the sixth. Capuano gave up five hits, struck out five and walked none.

Pirates starter Zach Duke also was effective while allowing two runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. He left with a 2-1 lead in the seventh, but Matt Capps gave up Brady Clark's two-out RBI single to tie it. Clark had been hitless in 14 at-bats.

The Brewers also scored on Corey Hart's double and Rivera's RBI single in the fifth.

Pittsburgh had a chance to take the lead in both the eighth and ninth, but reliever Jose Capellan got out of each jam. He got Ronny Paulino to pop up before striking out Jose Castillo with runners on first and second in the eighth. Capellan then struck out Joe Randa after the Pirates loaded the bases in the ninth.

Notes: Pirates LF Jason Bay didn't start a third consecutive game because of a strained hamstring, but hit a long fly ball as a pinch-hitter in the ninth. ... At different points in the game, Pirates manager Jim Tracy had both No. 3 hitter Freddy Sanchez, the NL's leading hitter, and cleanup hitter Randa put down sacrifice bunts. ... Tracy said before the game that SS Jack Wilson couldn't swing the bat because of a bone bruise in his right hand, but Wilson grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the 11th. ... CF Duffy prevented a run in the 12th, racing to his left and stretching out to making a diving catch on the warning track of Jeff Cirillo's two-out drive into the right-center gap. ... Marte also took the loss in Milwaukee's 6-3 victory Tuesday night.
