Regional Emmys honor Cope; WQED leads local nominees
Friday, August 04, 2006

When the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award nominations in simultaneous events held at Club Cafe on Pittsburgh's South Side, McFadden's in Philadelphia and The Quarter in Harrisburg, it called out the name of a guy who's already a winner: Myron Cope.

This year's Board of Governors' Award, recognizing career achievement and lasting contributions to the television industry, goes to Cope, who retired from the Steelers broadcast booth in June 2005.

Among local nominees, WQED led the way with 28; followed by WTAE, 10; KDKA, nine; and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh, three. Anchor/reporter Wendy Bell had six nominations for WTAE, and "On Q" segments led the way for WQED.

The regional Emmy Awards recognize excellence in news, programming and individual achievement in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, choosing this year from 306 entries representing the work of 21 stations, six cable entities and many independent producers from the region. WPXI Channel 11 did not enter the competition as a station.

The Mid-Atlantic Emmys will celebrate the phenomenon of reality TV when awards are handed out on Sept. 9 at the Philadelphia Marriott, with Gervase Peterson from "Survivor," season one, and regional TV personalities to assist with the award presentations.
