The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:
'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby'
Rated: PG-13.
Suitable for: Teens over 13 and adults
What you should know: Will Ferrell plays the race-car hero with two first names in a comic NASCAR romp, with sidekick John C. Reilly helping him thwart a fey French Formula One driver's challenge to their supremacy.
Language: Ricky's kids are fairly foul-mouthed, and mild profanity is peppered throughout.
Sexual situations and nudity: No full but some partial nudity (Ferrell's underwear) is on view.
Violence/scary situations: The stock-car violence is intense but used to comic effect.
Drug and alcohol use: There is no drug or alcohol use of any note.
'Barnyard'
Rated: PG.
Suitable for: All ages, although children need to be able to sit through an 80-minute movie plus previews and ads. However, the movie is filled with music and action to keep everyone entertained.
What you should know: This is a brightly colored, computer-animated story of what happens when the farmer isn't around. When the wise cow who serves as the barnyard leader dies, his party-loving son is expected to take over but doesn't want the responsibility. It's from Nickelodeon Movies and one of the people behind the "Jimmy Neutron" franchise.
Language: None.
Sexual situations and nudity: None, unless you count a cow preparing to give birth, but nothing the least bit adult is shown.
Violence/scary situations: The scariest involve coyotes who attack a cow and cause his death. Later, the coyotes round up some chickens and prepare to eat them. Other scenes, as when a donkey repeatedly kicks a farmer or cows engage in "boy-tipping," are played for laughs.
Drug and alcohol use: None, although a farmer might be drinking beer, but you can't read the label on the cans he cracks open.
