The Steelers will make it six draft picks down and three to go two days before they report to training camp when they sign quarterback Omar Jacobs today to a three-year contract.

Yesterday, they signed running back Cedric Humes to a three-year contract that includes a $30,000 signing bonus and annual NFL minimum salaries of $275,000, $360,000 and $445,000.

Humes, drafted in the seventh round, started nine games for Virginia Tech last season. He led the team with 752 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, capped by 119 yards in the Gator Bowl.

Jacobs, a fifth-round draft pick from Bowling Green, will serve as their No. 3 quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch. The club also is moving closer to signing its top three draft picks -- wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Willie Reid and safety Anthony Smith.

49ers

Michael Robinson, a former Penn State quarterback hoping to make the NFL as a running back, signed with San Francisco. Robinson, the 49ers' fourth-round draft pick, was a quarterback, receiver, halfback and punt returner in four years with the Nittany Lions.

Saints

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue toured the hurricane-damaged Superdome with New Orleans owner Tom Benson and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and was encouraged with the progress. Though repairs are ongoing, Tagliabue was impressed. He had said during earlier visits he had concerns about how long it would take to get the facility reopened.

Bengals

In a move to secure quarterback Carson Palmer's blind side, Cincinnati offered left tackle Levi Jones a six-year, $40 million contract extension.

Chargers

For the fifth time in six years, San Diego opened training camp without its first-round draft pick. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie missed both practices, but he did agree in principle to a five-year deal that could be worth $12.75 million. The deal contains guarantees of $7.35 million.

Browns

A TV station sued the team after Cleveland said it would break the station's contract to broadcast preseason games and other programming. The Browns are upset because the station aired a 911 call involving the team owner's relatives.

Raiders

First-round pick Michael Huff signed a $22.5 million, five-year contract with Oakland that guarantees the safety $15 million.
