Giant cards for the mayor
Tuesday, July 25, 2006

The local chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will unveil three giant best-wishes cards for Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor tomorrow, recognizing his history of helping their cause and his effort to beat central nervous system lymphoma.

The 6-foot-by-12-foot cards will be available for anyone to sign in PPG Plaza and U.S. Steel Plaza from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, and at The Coffee Tree Roasters in Squirrel Hill, a favorite mayoral haunt, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. "He's a larger-than-life guy, and I thought he'd appreciate a larger-than-life gesture," said Maureen Durkin, campaign director for the chapter. She said the cards may later go on tour, visiting Steelers training camp and possibly a Pirates game in search of fan and player signatures.

Mr. O'Connor participated in the society's last two fund-raising walks, and has been a part of many other events it has held. He was diagnosed with brain cancer two weeks ago, and remains hospitalized.
