An idea is only as good as its design. Last week, the O'Hara firm of Davison Design and Development Inc. was recognized nationally in BusinessWeek magazine for turning the idea for a skateboard-bicycle hybrid into the BikeBoard.

Check it out:

The BikeBoard company was founded in Newport Beach, Calif., in December 2003 by John Iavarone. He brought his idea to Davison to design the product, which combines for riders the feeling and dynamics of skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing and BMX riding. Riders push off with one foot and use the handlebars to steer. It earned a bronze in the 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Awards, sponsored jointly by the magazine and the Industrial Designers Society of America.

Another product the firm designed -- a Hover Creeper, a 14-pound garage creeper that helps mechanics navigate the undercarriage of a car -- won a silver in the 26th annual contest. There are four versions of the BikeBoard: the Tyke model for ages 4 and up, the Mini for ages 7 and up, and the Cruiser and Freestyle for ages 10 and up. They range in price from $69.99 to $129.99 and can be found locally at Dick's Sporting Goods.
