Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato announced today that all three contenders for a Pittsburgh slots casino have committed in writing to contribute proceeds to a new hockey arena.
Isle of Capri, which is a partner with the Penguins in a casino and arena plan, already had committed $290 million towards an arena.
But today, Mr. Onorato said two other companies that were not partners with the Penguins -- Forest City Enterprises and PITG Gaming -- have now also made commitments.
Both have pledged $7.5 million a year for 30 years toward construction of an arena. Mr. Onorato said both commitments are contingent on a company getting the state license to operate a casino and on the Penguins committing to staying in Pittsburgh.
In addition, Gov. Ed Rendell is prepared to advance $26.5 million in state money for site acquisition and preparation. The city Urban Redevelopment Authority revealed yesterday that it is trying to acquire property in the Uptown area for the new arena.
The county hopes to have the state money in hand by September and to begin construction next year.
Mr. Onorato said the spate of activity is prompted by the possible sale of the Penguins, which could occur soon.
