An early morning waterline break Downtown caused a sinkhole that nearly swallowed a pickup truck yesterday.
By 7:30 a.m., the broken line had been found and capped in Garrison Way, an alley connecting Liberty Avenue and Exchange Way, another alley.
Wreckers towed the truck away.
Holly Parada, spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, said the 3:30 a.m. break resulted from a leaking cap on the 12-inch waterline. When it broke, water rushed into a sewer beneath the line, causing the walls of the 42-inch brick sewer to collapse.
The heavy flow of water spilled along the sewer line toward the Allegheny River where it caused geyser-like spurts to blow off a manhole cover along the bank of the Allegheny, beside the 10th Street Bypass.
No injuries were reported.
Workers were to repair the collapsed sewer before fixing the waterline, Ms. Parada said.
No customers were without water service, because service lines were re-routed. But, Ms. Parada said, fire protection sprinklers were out of service for a building at 925 Liberty.
