Former Pirate to visit field
Thursday, July 06, 2006

Former Pirate Al Oliver will be at J.C. Kelly Field on Ravine Street in McKeesport between noon and 2 p.m. tomorrow, helping the LaRosa Boys and Girls celebrate a host of improvements to its ball field.

The field, which serves 14 teams in the McKeesport Youth Baseball Organization and is used for flag football in the fall, will get a makeover in advance of the visit.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., some 200 volunteers from the community will refurbish the park, laying new sod and clay field surfaces, building a concession stand and batting cage, erecting a scoreboard and installing fencing.

Major League Baseball, Home Depot and KaBOOM, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating parks and playgrounds for children, are sponsoring the project. Major League Baseball is doing so as part of the All-Star week festivities, which culminate with the All-Star Game at PNC Park on Tuesday.

"This field is going to be state-of-the-art," LaRosa Chairman Jim Barry said. He said the grant-funded improvements were worth about $35,000.

In addition to Mr. Oliver, U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills; state Sen. Sean Logan, D-Monroeville; and McKeesport Mayor James Brewster are expected to attend the dedication of the field.
