The skies will come alive with color and sound as fireworks displays are set off for Independence Day celebrations in several South towns during next week's holiday. There's other fun planned, too -- parades, races, sporting events, musical performances and the like.
Here is a schedule of most of the South suburban events.
Bethel Park/Upper St. Clair
Fireworks will be launched at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday from the South Hills Village Port Authority property and should be visible from the mall's parking lots and surrounding areas.
There is no rain date scheduled.
Brentwood
Tuesday's festivities begin with Mayor Ken Lockhart performing a wedding ceremony. [See story, Page 1.]
Brentwood VFW Post 1810 will raise the colors at 8:30 a.m., then retire them at 9:25 a.m., both at the high school stadium.
The 23rd annual Brentwood Firecracker 5K run begins at 9 a.m. It will start and finish near the intersection of Brownsville Road and Route 51.
A parade will form at 10 a.m. on Pyramid, Brentwood, Glendale and Sankey avenues and move south on Brownsville Road to Brentwood Towne Square.
Brentwood Cares, an organization that sends packages to soldiers overseas or away from home will sponsor a float in the parade. Volunteers from the group will collect white and black tube socks for veterans and soldiers from spectators during the parade.
There will be a baby parade at 2 p.m. for those age 5 and younger at the fire department parking lot.
An aquatic program will start at 2:15 p.m. at the swimming pool.
Track and field events will be held at 4 p.m. at the high school stadium.
An oldies group, Round Three, will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the high school stadium preceding fireworks there at 9:30 p.m.
Dormont
The borough's July 4 and Dormont Day celebration will feature:
A flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. by VFW Post 694 in the swimming pool parking lot. Also, grab bag distribution begins in the upper park.
Footraces at 9:30 a.m. sponsored by the Dormont Boosters in the Castle Playground.
Games, arts and caricaturist Marie Sturman, all in upper park at 10 a.m.
Hazlett Farms pony rides and petting zoo, below main pavilion, where bingo will be held, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dixieland music at performance tent at 11:30 a.m.
Dormont Athletic Boosters Association softball and baseball games at noon at Pop Murray field.
Daniels and McClain, country rock, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at performance tent.
The Deanna Dawn Denning Combo throughout the evening at the pool parking lot stage.
Beaver Valley Skydivers will drop to the pool parking lot at 8 p.m.
Fireworks will start at 9:30 p.m. near the tennis courts in the pool parking lot.
Green Tree
Activities on Tuesday will be held at Wilson Park pool. Features include:
Flag raising by American Legion Post 823 at noon.
A summertime lunch at noon at a nominal cost.
Disc jockey, raffles and face painting at 12:15 p.m.
Kennywood
There will be a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
McKeesport
Entertainment Tuesday at Renziehausen Park includes:
Concerts by Family of Eve, noon to 1:45 p.m.; New Orleans Riverside Band, 2 to 3:45 p.m.; Tony Janflone, 4 to 5:45 p.m.; and Real Deal Band, 7 to 9 p.m.
Burial of time capsule at 9 p.m.
Fireworks at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.
Mt. Lebanon
Activities planned for Mt. Lebanon Park Tuesday include:
All-star baseball and softball from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Fun and activities including moon walk, pony rides, climbing wall and petting zoo from noon to 5 p.m.
Sputzy and the Soul Providers performance at 7 p.m.
Fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
Scott
Community Day events at Scott Park include:
Flag raising by American Legion Post 290 at noon.
Pool events from 12:20 to 5 p.m.
On the small ballfield, the T-ball, Minor, Midget and Senior baseball and/or softball leagues will play, while the Mighty Mites will play on the big ballfield.
The pool closes at 6 p.m. and reopens a 7 p.m. as people line up to watch fireworks later in the evening.
Fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
South Fayette
Fireworks at dusk Monday can be viewed at various locations near El Rancho Soccer Field on Hickory Grade Road, where they will be set off.
Whitehall
Caste Village will feature an early holiday celebration starting at 5 p.m. Friday with a DJ, a musical group, sidewalk sales and entertainment for children. Fireworks start at 9:30 p.m.
White Oak
Community Day starting at noon July 8 at Heritage Hill Community Park with games, prizes, food booth and giveaways.
The 80s Band plays from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks.
