There was never a doubt in Dom Henderson's mind that he would play football in the fall ... he just didn't know where.

An outstanding athlete at Beaver Falls High School, Henderson was undecided about his football future until earlier this month. That's when he decided to attend Thiel College in Greenville.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say Thiel got a steal.

Henderson was the second-leading passer in the WPIAL last fall during the regular season. He completed 139 of 255 passes for 2,189 yards and 19 touchdowns, setting school record in the process.

At 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds, he doesn't have the size college coaches want in a quarterback, but he has the arm and the athletic ability.

He will get an opportunity to show off his passing skills tomorrow night in the 27th Penn-Ohio All Star Football Classic. This year's game will be at West Branch High School in Beloit, Ohio, and kickoff is 7:30.

"I've still got schools calling from all over," Henderson said. "I tell them I'm going to Thiel, but I might only be there a year. I'd like to end up at Grambling State, so I'm hoping I can get some film together after the season and send it to them and see what happens."

Henderson picked Thiel because coach Jack Leopheimer said he would give him a chance to compete for the quarterback job. Henderson would like to remain a signal caller, but also doesn't want to sit on the bench and watch.

He played defensive back for Beaver Falls and is quick to the football. Henderson said he wouldn't mind giving wide receiver a try.

"I just want to play," he said. "I know [Thiel] had a quarterback leave, but I also know they have a couple of guys back. I'd like to stay at quarterback, but if I have a chance to see action at receiver or d-back, that's OK."

Henderson will share the quarterback duties on the Pennsylvania team with Western Beaver graduate Jon D'Angelo, who is headed for Marietta College. D'Angelo threw for just 904 yards and seven scores in Western Beaver's run-oriented attack.

While the Penn-Ohio game doesn't have any rules about how much each team has to pass, Pennsylvania coach Matt Gray of Western Beaver isn't going to play it close to he vest on offense.

"The good thing about not having to pass a percentage of plays is you can set things up with play action and run screens and draws," Gray said. "Now, if we're running the ball well, we're not going to go away from that. But we're also going to open it up and throw.

"The nice thing about coaching a game like this is that you have guys with all the skills, so you're not just locked in on doing one thing. I want to give all of our guys a chance to showcase their talents."

If Henderson gets an opportunity to throw deep, he will have some inviting targets. Seneca Valley's Zach Duggan caught 43 passes for 649 yards and five scores last year and has good speed and hands. Blackhawk's Eric Petre had 29 receptions for 551 yards and six scores. And tight ends Josh Atkins (6-2, 185) of Ellwood City and Harry Girting (6-5, 210) of New Brighton are big targets.

"We've got some good receivers. Duggan doesn't drop anything. But I'm missing one receiver ... Lance Jeter," Henderson said, referring to his Beaver Falls teammate who is at the University of Cincinnati and will play wideout for the Bearcats.

Henderson will have a familiar target to throw at. Tyrik Collins of Beaver Falls is going to get some repetitions at receiver, but it could be Duggan who will be the deep threat.

Duggan knew about Henderson before they met at practice last week. He watched Beaver Falls play on TV in a Thursday night game last year.

"He throws a nice ball," Duggan said of Henderson. "Hopefully, we'll hook up."

They aren't the only offensive forces Pennsylvania has. Beaver running back Evan Nardone, a Lafayette recruit, rushed for 722 yards on just 97 carries last year. Hopewell's Mike Elmore gained 1,064 yards on 162 attempts.

Elmore's status for the game is iffy after an ankle injury in practice Monday. Center's Justin Sanders, who gained 576 yards on 93 attempts, was to spend some time at tailback as a precaution.

Henderson also likes his team's offensive line. It has some size with Ellwood City's Dan Burr (6-2,N300), Hopewell's Mike Downs (6-3, 305) and Quaker Valley's Andrew Hanchulak (6-5, 280).

"I understand Ohio was quite a bit bigger up front than we were last year," Gray said. "I don't think that will be the case this year. We'll be pretty even."

While all-star games are supposed to be fun, Gray said there is pressure to win, just as if it were a regular-season contest. Pennsylvania leads the series, 19-7.

"You're expected to win, just like during the season," Gray said. "I don't know much about eastern Ohio football. I know they will use a spread offense, but that's about it. We'll be more two tight ends, but that doesn't mean we won't open up or that they won't go to a two-tight end set.

"It's all about making adjustments and not turning the ball over. Bad exchanges from center and fumbles are things you don't want to have happen."

Penn-Ohio notes: Gray said he didn't know how his quarterbacks would split time, whether they would switch each series or every quarter. ... West Allegheny receiver Vinny Cherico was hurt in practice and probably won't play. ... Ambridge receiver/defensive back Darrell Henry was added to the roster last week. ... Pennsylvania assistant coaches are Bill Hughes (Riverside), Steve Smiley (Moon), J.C. Summers (Freedom), Matt Taylor (Burgettstown) and Mark Taylor (Beaver Falls). ... Tickets at the gate are $7.
