WASHINGTON SUNDAY: High School Baseball All-Stars
Sunday, June 25, 2006

California dreamin' of a WPIAL baseball title? The Trojans (19-7) realized that hope, surging to the Class A crown before advancing to the PIAA semifinals, where they lost to Villa Maria by a run. Leading the way was Zack Jeney, a hard-throwing, hard-hitting standout who is the Washington Sunday Edition Player of the Year. He headlines this 10-player all-star squad, which represents seven of the 23 teams in Washington and Greene counties. Three athletes from Peters Township (19-1) were named: Luke Pisarcik, Kevin McGuire and Jordan Jankowski. California, with Jeney and Jason Britton, is the only other team with more than one all-star.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Zack Jeney

California Area

Junior, Pitcher/First Baseman

At the plate and throwing toward it, Jeney was a standout this season, the linchpin in the Trojans' run to the WPIAL Class A championship and the PIAA semifinals. A left-handed pitcher, he compiled a 12-2 record with a 1.36 ERA, and struck out 165 batters and walked 37 in 922/3 innings. Jeney, a right-handed swinger, batted cleanup for most of the season, and fairly cleaned up. He hit .402 with four doubles, one triple, three homers, 27 RBIs and 16 runs scored. Jeney's two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning gave California a 5-4 lead in the WPIAL final, and he shut down Geibel to close out a complete-game victory. He also is a glove master, committing only two errors and finishing with a .992 fielding percentage. Jeney, who also registered more than 100 strikeouts in 2005, is a three-year starter.

Jake Wojcik

Burgettstown Area

Senior, Pitcher/Catcher

The Blue Devils struggled this season, going 7-12. But Wojcik personally accounted for 71 percent of those victories. A right-hander, he compiled a 5-2 record with a 2.18 ERA, and fired complete games in six of nine starts. In 542/3 innings, Wojcik registered 63 strikeouts and 21 walks en route to making first-team All-Section 2-AA. He also caught pitches, and batted .293 (17 for 58) with seven RBIs. Wojcik (5-11, 170) will play baseball at Penn State Beaver.

Jason Britton

California Area

Senior, Shortstop

The only 12th-grader on the Trojans' roster had some marvelous senior moments for the WPIAL Class A champs. Britton batted .387 with seven doubles, 14 RBIs, 26 runs. He also is an excellent fielder, and though he pitched very little, he earned a save in the WPIAL semifinals. Britton (6-2, 185), a four-year starter, made first-team All-Section 1 the past two seasons. His 102 career hits are a school record. He will play at Penn State Fayette.

Brian Muransky

Canon-McMillan

Junior Pitcher

A Washington Sunday Edition all-star selection as an infielder last year, Muransky made the team this time from the mound. He was the leading vote-getter among pitchers in balloting for All-Section 3-AAAA, despite a lower back injury and the Big Macs' 5-14 record. Muransky (6-1, 170), a right-hander, has a fastball that has been clocked in the high 80s, but good off-speed stuff as well. He is regarded as a quality college prospect as a pitcher or position player.

Nathan Helster

Charleroi Area

Junior, Third Baseman

Though smallish (5-8, 160), Helster was a big hit in his third season as a starter. He batted .529 (37 for 70) with 11 doubles, two triples, three homers and 35 RBIs. Helster was a demon on the bases as well, registering 26 steals and scoring 18 runs for a playoff team. He also pitched in relief and played some at second base, but made first-team All-Section 2-AA off his play at third base. Helster batted .464 a year ago and has a career .442 average.

Bob Mary

Chartiers-Houston

Senior, Outfielder

Mary provided more than a little bam, as he was one of the top power hitters in Western Pennsylvania this spring. He ended the regular season as the WPIAL's leading hitter at .630. Including one playoff game, Mary batted .603 (35 for 58) with seven doubles, two triples, eight homers, 30 RBIs and 27 runs scored. For four years, he batted cleanup and played center field, where he showed a strong arm and good range. He is considering Pitt and West Virginia.

Jordan Jankowski

Peters Township

Sophomore, Pitcher/DH

This sophomore was a jinx to foes this season, as he was among the WPIAL leaders in a number of offensive and pitching categories. A right-handed hitter and thrower, Jankowski batted .527 (29 for 55) with seven doubles, seven homers, 26 RBIs and 24 runs. On the mound, he was 6-1 with 70 strikeouts in 50 innings and a 1.54 ERA. Jankowski, and the Indians (19-1), did not lose until they faced Hampton in the WPIAL first round. He was first-team All-Section 4-AAA.

Kevin McGuire

PetersTownship

Senior, Catcher/Pitcher

"Thou shalt not steal" was the first commandment of McGuire as a catcher. Most teams did not attempt to steal on this defensive standout; only one runner did so successfully this season. McGuire also was a solid hitter, batting .322 (19 for 59) with five doubles, one triple, three homers, 20 RBIs, 20 runs. On the mound, he was 3-0 with one save and a 1.67 ERA. McGuire, a repeat Washington selection, will play at Marietta College, the NCAA Division III champ.

Luke Pisarcik

Peters Township

Senior, Outfielder

Offensively and defensively, Luke was a force for the Indians (19-1). Pisarcik, a fleet runner, frequently kick-started the offense from the leadoff spot. He batted .353 (18 for 51) for the regular season, with three doubles, 26 runs scored, and 10 steals in 11 attempts. Pisarcik, a right-handed batter and thrower, was the runaway leader among outfielders in balloting for the All-Section 4-AAA team. He will likely play college baseball at either Seton Hill or Slippery Rock.

Kyle Fisher-Law

Ringgold

Junior, Shortstop

Fisher-Law was quite the catch, repeating as an All-Section 4-AAA selection and as a Washington Sunday Edition all-star. Last year, he qualified as an outfielder; this year, he moved to shortstop and was second among infielders in all-section balloting. He batted .484 (30 for 52) this spring, with five home runs. Fisher-Law (6-0, 200) has a strong arm and good speed and is considered a college prospect. He also plays football and basketball for Ringgold.
