Tracy tabbed by Garner to be All-Star coach
Garner also selects rest of NL's coaches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jim Tracy will have to give up his PNC Park office for the All-Star game, but maybe not his spot in the dugout.

The Pirates' manager was one of two coaches named yesterday to the National League staff by the Houston Astros' Phil Garner, who will run the team. The other was the Cincinnati Reds' Jerry Narron.

It will mark Tracy's second turn in such a role. He served in 2002 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and will help us as we try to get home-field advantage in the World Series back in the National League," Garner said.

Tracy learned of the selection during the 15-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Asked about it afterward, he politely deferred comment until today, apparently because the game had left him sour.

Chuck Tanner, who managed the Pirates to their last World Series championship in 1979, will be in uniform as an honorary coach at the request of Garner, the second baseman on that team.

The other coaches, who will assist in batting practice and other field duties, will be from Garner's staff in Houston: Mark Bailey, Cecil Cooper, Jose Cruz, Gary Gaetti, Jim Hickey and Doug Mansolino.

Also, Brad Henderson, the Pirates' head athletic trainer, will serve in the same role for the National League. The other trainer will be Stan Johnston of the Dodgers.
