BMW: Two new coupes are on the way
Wednesday, June 21, 2006

What a hot summer this will be for BMW fans.

The German performance maker is introducing the BMW M Coupe and Z4 Coupe 3.0 Si.

The Z4 Coupe 3.0 Si, with a 255 horsepower in-line six-cylinder engine, will have a base price of $40,795, while the M Coupe, featuring the 330 horsepower, 3.2 liter six cylinder will have a price of $49,995.

The Z4 Coupe has got to be one of the most arresting looking automobiles on the road. It combines classic good looks -- it has almost an Art Deco air about it -- with a futuristic ambiance that should be a hit for BMW. You'll can get that 255 horsepower engine with either a six-speed manual or six-speed steptronic transmission with shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Handling, as you might expect, is as precise as ever. That's helped not only by increased torsional rigidity over the Z4 roadster, but the coupe also has dynamic stability control. Emergency braking capability is maximized by features such as "brake drying," which keeps the brakes dry in wet conditions, and "brake standby," which immediately positions the brake pads nearer the discs whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal quickly. There's also "brake fade compensation," which maximizes brake pressure and stopping ability whenever the brakes get hot.

Then there's the Z4 M Coupe, which has a six-speed manual transmission only. Like the BMW M3, it has speed-sensitive variable lM differential lock for outstanding stability and traction and special white on black instruments like other BMW M products.

You can tell the M Coupe from the Z4 Coupe 3.0 Si by the front air dam, which consists of an X-shaped combination of lines and opening, plus the large air intake scoops. Around back, you'll see a horizontal diffuser and four round tail pipes that are a trademark of BMW M design.
