At a farewell Mass yesterday Catholic Bishop Donald Wuerl thanked all the people of Pittsburgh for their support during his 18 years of ministry here.
The Mass signaled the close of his tenure as the spiritual leader of 801,000 Catholics and as the executive who guided a complex organization out of $3 million in debt and toward solvency.
"My joy this afternoon in this Mass with you is in the opportunity to say to you who have been so much a part of my efforts to serve the church, 'thank you.' Thank you for your help, thank you for your support, thank you for your care."
The official guests included the governor, Congressmen, representatives from each of the 214 parishes in the six-county diocese and the Bishop's housekeeper.
His formal installation as archbishop in Washington D.C. will take place June 22.
