First job: 1964, selling ice cream at Orchard Beach (Bronx, N.Y.) Hardest and most fulfilling job: Director of residential life, Ward Home for Children. In this position I supervised the day-to-day operations of the "Home." Specifically this meant: 1. creating a safe and predictable "home" environment, within an institutional context; 2. addressing each youth's emotional, health, psychiatric, educational and personal trauma created by family dysfunction; 3. assisting these children to regain (and for many develop) a childhood; and 4. developing programming that would assist these youth to live independently after graduation from high school. Biggest Work Challenge: To confront institutional ineffectiveness and develop "win-win" change strategies. Favorite Stock: One that does not lose money. Away from work I: love to listen to good music and practice my dog training skills. Esther L. Bush, president and CEO, Urban League of Pittsburgh, was given the oath of office for the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. She was nominated to the board by Gov. Gregory Cherpes, M.D., has joined the medical staff of The Children's Institute as a psychiatrist. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia announced the election of Susan Farrell and Mike Mortensen to its board. Ms. Farrell serves as senior vice president and the Charitable and Endowment Service team leader for National City Bank. Mr. Mortensen is the president and CEO of PNC Investments.
Carnegie Museum of Art announced that board member William E. Hunt assumed the position of chairman, effective June 2. He succeeds Marcia Gumberg, who has served as chairman since 2000. She will continue to serve on the board as emerita trustee.
