Arched glass doors from the living room lead to the front porch of Michael Everhart's house, one of 17 on the Observatory Hill House Tour.

When Michael Everhart was house-shopping, he liked the looks of this house in Observatory Hill -- until the former owners moved their stuff out.

Left: Everhart wasn't a gardener until he bought this house and decided to continue the former owner's English garden.

"I said 'This place needs more work than I thought.' ... It needed my style."

Thirteen years later, the 1927 Craftsman-style brick house has the "clean lines," dark-stained woodwork and contemporary furniture that suits Mr. Everhart. Tomorrow, it will be one of 17 houses on the Observatory Hill House Tour.

In addition to the architectural variety of what's known as the Marshall Fields neighborhood, the walking tour will showcase the work of local artists. Woodturner Edric Florence's vases, bowls and other pieces will be installed in Mr. Everhart's house on Mt. Alister Road; oil paintings, watercolors, stained glass and photography will be displayed in others.

The tour runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased tomorrow at 3000 Perrysville Ave. or reserved by calling 412-231-2887. To save $2, bring a "Save the Date" post card listing city house tours. Information: www.observatoryhill.net.
