Two ball fields open
Thursday, June 01, 2006

The dedication of two new ball fields at Renzihausen Park in McKeesport couldn't run long last week.

The girls softball and youth Little League teams were scheduled to use the fields immediately after the ceremony.

It took the city more than a year to build the two fields, and Mayor Jim Brewster has made a promise: The fields, dedicated to youth leagues, are going to stay dedicated to the young people of McKeesport.

Mr. Brewster, speaking at a council meeting last month, said he was not going to let adult athletes take over the fields, which have been built into the hill above Lake Emilie.

The two fields, Lake Emilie Field and Sulphur Springs Field, measure 200 feet from the batter's box to the outfield fence. They are now the home fields for the McKeesport Girls Softball League and the McKeesport Baseball Association.

Mr. Brewster announced his plan to build the fields in October 2004. Those plans were realized with labor provided by workers from McKeesport's public works and sewer departments and the Allegheny County Public Works Department. Contributing money for the fields were the Allegheny County Regional Asset District and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
