Rash of ATM thefts
Saturday, May 27, 2006

For the fourth time in the last two months, thieves got away with an automated teller machine after yanking it out of a store, state police said.

The latest theft happened at about 4 a.m. yesterday at the Exxon Buy N Fly market in Herminie. Manager Steve Weiss told KDKA-TV that somebody rammed a pickup into the front door of the mini-market, wrapped a chain around the ATM machine inside, and dragged it out the door before stowing it in the pickup and taking off.

Similar crimes have been occurring in nearby Washington County since April.

The latest was at 1:55 a.m. Thursday at the Lone Pine One Stop, just off Interstate 79 in Amwell, Washington County.

On April 7, someone dragged a money machine out of a BP station just off Interstate 70 in Buffalo Township. Minutes earlier, there was a failed attempt to steal an ATM from an Exxon station in Donegal Township.

And on April 25, police said two burglars broke into a Kwik Fill store in Washington, wrapped a chain around the ATM and drove off.

Police in Washington County said they are trying to determine whether the crimes are connected.
