The Senate passed a broad immigration bill that would bolster border security by adding border control agents and authorizing a 370-mile fence along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. But the most controversial aspect of the bill is that it would allow many of the nation's eleven million illegal immigrants to gain citizenship. The bill's supporters now face a fierce battle with the House. In a 62-36 Senate vote, Senator Santorum sided with conservatives who said the bill amounted to amnesty while Senator Specter led the bipartisan coalition that got the bill through.
