An automated teller machine was taken from a Westmorelnd County convenience store today, the latest in a rash of of ATM robberies.
A manager and employees at the Exxon Buy and Fly on Highland Avenue in Herminie said they lost an ATM early this morning.
Sometime about 4 a.m. surveillance cameras captured images of two men who rammed the front door of the closed store with a pickup truck, put a chain around the ATM just inside the door, and dragged it from its mooring. They loaded the machine into the truck and sped away.
Three similar incidents in the past two months have been reported in Washington County, including one about 1:55 a.m. yesterday at the Lone Pine One Stop, just off Interstate 79, in Amwell Township.
A vehicle backed up to the door, and a store surveillance camera caught the silhouette of a person smashing out the window, state police said. The tape shows a person then entering the store, wrapping a chain around the ATM and pulling it out of the store with the truck.
On April 7, someone dragged a money machine out of a BP station, just off Interstate 70, in Buffalo Township. Minutes earlier, there was a failed attempt to steal an ATM from an Exxon station in Donegal Township.
Two weeks later, a burglar broke into a Kwik Fill store in Washington, wrapped a chain around the ATM and drove off.
Police said they are trying to determine whether the crimes are connected.
