Thursday, May 25, 2006

A 43-year-old man was treated and released from a Johnstown hospital after his car was split in two by a freight train last night in Derry, Westmoreland County.

Hubert Rice, of Derry, was stopped at a railroad crossing on Hillside Road at about 7:30 p.m., waiting for a southbound freight train to clear the crossing. After the train passed, Mr. Rice drove his 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit around the extended crossing arms, but was then hit on the passenger side by a northbound Norfolk Southern freight train on the second set of tracks, police said.

Mr. Rice was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center after the accident.

The railroad crossing arms were working properly at the time of the crash, according to state police.
