Pa. Tourism Office seeks official bumper sticker slogan
Wednesday, May 24, 2006

HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania has a lot of things designated as "official."

There's our official bird (ruffed grouse), mammal (white-tailed deer), fish (brook trout), dog (Great Dane), flower (mountain laurel) and on and on.

About a year ago, state officials generated a buzz with a contest to dream up a new official state slogan, and the winner was "Pennsylvania -- State of Independence.''

But amazingly enough, we don't have an official bumper sticker slogan. So the state Tourism Office jumped in yesterday to fill the void.

From now until July 1, the agency is conducting a contest for residents to vote on one of 16 snappy slogans that would fit on the official state bumper sticker.

You can see the 16 candidates and cast your vote at the Tourism Office's Web site, www.visitPA.com.

Some of the contenders: "I break (sic) for shoo fly pie;" "My other ride is a whitewater raft;" "Pennsylvania is for roadtrippers;" "Honk if you like roadtrips;" and "Don't follow me -- pick your own road."

Tourism official Carrie Fischer added, "For fun, aspiring bumper sticker authors can also submit their own slogan and artwork for consideration," but only the official 16 candidates will be voted on.

The voting will end at midnight on July 1 and the winning sticker will be announced July 4 on the Web site.

Not much of a prize, though. Free bumper stickers with the winning slogan will be available -- to anyone -- at PennDOT welcome centers.
