Friday, May 19, 2006

The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:

"The DaVinci Code"

Rated: PG-13 for disturbing images, violence, some nudity, thematic material, brief drug references and sexual content.

Best for: Mature high school students, especially if they've read the source book, and older.

What you should know: Tom Hanks stars in the adaptation of the best-selling Dan Brown novel. The movie's controversial secrets about Jesus and Mary Magdalene have prompted prayer vigils, protests and boycotts.

Language: A few mild four-letter words.

Sexual situations and nudity: A monk who practices self-punishment is naked and photographed from behind. A naked corpse is shown but carefully lit. There is a quick shot of a couple in the throes of sex and a discreet depiction of a woman in labor.

Violence/scary situations: People are shot, drowned, poisoned, punched and threatened with injury, and there is a flashback to a violent, deadly car collision.

Drug and alcohol use: An addict gets ready to shoot up and there are quick shots of people consuming alcohol.
