Judie: The newest trend in denim is skinny jeans. Now that you've had some time to digest this new style, Style Matters will give you hints on how to wear them and what to wear them with. We asked several fashion professionals, and, needless to say, these pros were very excited about skinny jeans. Our enthusiasm was more restrained, due mainly to the fact that Evelinda refuses to wear them.
Evelinda: I'm no slave to fashion. Can't this be a fad that passes me by? I am not putting my flared-leg jeans in mothballs. No way.
Judie: When you see how easy it is to accessorize this jean style, you will change your tune. (I didn't know you were supposed to put denim in mothballs. Am I missing something?)
Evelinda: We talked with Brandis Becky, owner of Brandis B boutique in Denver, whose store stocks a fabulous collection of designer denim and matching tops. She told us that skinny jeans should be long enough to drape generously at the ankle. You want to see some folds at the bottom. That's part of the look. "Tuck them easily and comfortably into boots for spring or wear them with wedge heels and ballet flats in the summer," Becky explained. She calls the look "rocker chic."
Judie: Macy's West Women's fashion director Tifani Wilt likes pairing skinny jeans with a shorter jacket over a longer tunic. She also recommends kimono tops, bubble blouses and fabrics with natural draping. The goal is too look loose on the top and tighter on the bottom. She says: "Don't wear big with big or tight with tight." Women with curves should opt for longer tops, but not too wide, to avoid looking top-heavy.
Evelinda: Patti Weinstein, owner of the trendy, cutting-edge Roxy boutiques in Vail and Avon, Colo., suggests buying skinny jeans with some stretch for comfort and a better fit. (This is an absolute must. A bonus is that the stretch makes the waistline hug the hips in a more secure manner, if you get my drift.) Weinstein recommends topping skinny jeans with less-embellished shirts than we saw in the stores last year. Instead, she says to look for baby-doll styles, empire waists, crochet fabrics and layered T-shirts with jackets. Some girls are even wearing short summer dresses over skinny jeans. I have the perfect dress to wear over my pair.
Judie: What's this?
Evelinda: When I saw all the different tops I could wear with skinny jeans, plus how good they will look with my new wedge sandals, I thought, why not? Judie, would ya help zip me into a pair of these bad boys?
