Obituary: Mary M. Perugini / Dress/bridal shop owner for 50 years
June 23, 1922 - April 30, 2006
Thursday, May 04, 2006

For 50 years, Mary M. Perugini ran a little dress shop and bridal gallery in West View.

She named the shop Patti Ann Bridal, after her only child, and created many of the designs seen in the window. Her husband, Jino, kept the books.

Mrs. Perugini was born and raised on the North Side by her parents, Frank and Concetta Peters, who immigrated from Italy. After high school, she went to Louise Salinger's School of Design, where she designed and sewed the gown she wore to graduation.

Mrs. Perugini, who had lived in West View, died Sunday at the John J. Kane Regional Center/Ross of complications from Lou Gehrig's disease. She was 83.

A petite woman with dark, black hair, Mrs. Perugini enjoyed dressing up and always wore dresses, never slacks, to her shop. There was nothing she did not -- or could not -- create. She made hats, sportswear and formal wear. Two or three times a year she went to New York City or Miami to view designer showcases and purchase clothing.

When she added bridal gowns to the shop, she personalized the service by reconstructing gowns and offering expert alterations. Many in high society were her patrons.

She belonged to St. Athanasius Christian Mothers and West View VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her daughter Patricia of West View, she is survived by three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Phyllis Ackner of Bridgewater, N.J., and Anne Dipaola of Avalon; and a brother, Dominic Peters of Hopewell. Mass will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at St. Athanasius Church, 7 Chalfonte Ave., West View.
