New Yorker magazine city watcher Brendan Gill once wrote that if Pittsburgh were "situated somewhere in the heart of Europe, tourists would eagerly journey hundreds of miles out of their way to visit."

And that was before our new stadiums were built.

Although Pittsburgh's charms may be obvious to those of us who know and love it, finding your way around can be confusing for strangers and even sometimes for natives.

That's why the Post-Gazette has produced this guide, a one-day, eight section walking tour through the Golden Triangle.

Not all notable Downtown landmarks and attractions are found on this particular itinerary, simply because there's only so much one can do in so little time.

One day is barely enough time to enjoy more than a passing taste of the attractions packed into this itinerary. Stopping and spending more than a few minutes at many of these noteworthy places will blow the schedule. But that's all right, too.

We've planned this route so that a reasonably ambulatory adult with a general interest in history, art, architecture and good food can explore the heart of a great American city. How much distance you can actually cover in a single stretch will depend on a variety of other factors, from your personal interests and stamina to the prevailing weather. Whether you plan to complete this marathon in a single day or savor individual segments from time to time, we think you'll learn some things you never knew about Pittsburgh.
