All-Star Moments: 2nd Game, July 10, 1934 at the Polo Grounds, New York
Monday, April 24, 2006

The American League overcame a four-run deficit and defeated the National League, 9-7, before a crowd of 48,363. A two-run double by Indians outfielder Earl Averill and a two-run single by Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing highlighted a six-run fifth inning for the AL.

Indians pitcher Mel Harder was the winner after giving up just one hit in five-plus inning of relief. Cubs pitcher Lon Warneke and Dodgers pitcher Van Mungo each gave up four runs, but Mungo was credited with the loss.

Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin consecutively in the first and second innings.

Pirates third baseman Pie Traynor went 2 for 5 and drove in a run.

As we draw closer to this year's All-Star Game July 11 at PNC Park, we will count down -- game by game -- to the 77th Midsummer Classic.
