Lower Burrell chiropractor admits insurance fraud
Friday, April 14, 2006

A Lower Burrell chiropractor pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to defrauding an insurance company of millions of dollars by submitting false bills.

Douglas Henderson, 43, the former owner of Burrell Chiropractic Center on Wildlife Lodge Road, waived a formal indictment and instead pleaded guilty to all the charges against him, including health care fraud, conspiracy and income tax evasion.

According to the prosecution, Mr. Henderson submitted false medical bills to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1995 through 2002. As part of the scheme, he shared what he received from the insurance company with his patients.

One man, Brandon Burns, who has already pleaded guilty for his role in the conspiracy, had bills totaling $80,000 sent to Highmark. Mr. Henderson paid Mr. Burns more than $16,000.
