A West Deer winery was burglarized and vandalized Monday night by a man who had come from a drug and alcohol treatment center just down the road.
The 18-year-old suspect broke into La Casa Narcisi Winery on Gibsonia Road using a piece of lumber, broke several bottles of wine, and tampered with three of the 1,000-liter tanks where the wine was being stored, said West Deer Police Chief Jon Lape.
Damage was estimated at $20,000 -- but will be more than $100,000 if the wine in the tanks is judged to have gone bad.
Jesse Derflinger of Beaver Falls was arrested soon after the break-in, and charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, said Chief Lape.
He said the suspect had gone to sign in at Ridgeview Adolescent Behavioral Health Center, a residential drug and alcohol treatment program a half-mile from the winery, when he suddenly decided he didn't want to stay there.
Citing medical privacy laws, Ridgeview spokeswoman Andrea Young could not reveal whether Mr. Derflinger was a client at the treatment center.
Ridgeview is not a lockdown facility, said Chief Lape. It serves a combination of court-ordered clients and voluntary sign-ins. Ms. Young said the center's patients are 12 to 18 years old.
The winery's main building sits on 10 acres, behind locked gates; it was closed at the time, and had a burglar alarm.
At about 6:45 p.m., police say, Mr. Derflinger smashed through an arched window and broke several bottles of wine, spilling it on the floor. The suspect then depressurized three airtight tanks of wine, said Chief Lape, valued at more than $75,000.
"If the wine goes bad, it could be painful," said winery employee Carrie List.
After the suspect left the winery, he ended up at a house about 1,000 yards away, said Chief Lape. He knocked on the door, and was drinking from a jug of wine. The neighbors called police.
Ms. List said the winery never had had any trouble with Ridgeview residents; in fact, nobody on staff even knew of the center's existence before Monday.
According to Chief Lape, Ridgeview residents have been involved in a handful of incidents over the last few years. One stole a vehicle, another pushed one of his officers into moving traffic, and a runaway tried to elude police by jumping into a nearby creek at night before she was apprehended.
