Steelers, Haynes agree to deal
With RB's two-year contract, Rooney says team likely done signing free agents this year

ORLANDO -- The Steelers kept another cog from their Super Bowl team and now may push themselves away from the free-agency table.

Verron Haynes, their third-down back, agreed to a two-year contract yesterday, club president Art Rooney said.

"My whole thing was to stay in Pittsburgh," Haynes said. "I like the system I play in and I know what to do. I had a few other teams who were interested but my intent was to stay here."

With Haynes coming to a contract agreement, that leaves only Quincy Morgan among what were a dozen unrestricted free agents on the team.

"We probably will focus more now on getting ready for the draft and possibly extending some of the guys who are in the last year of their deal," Rooney said. "We don't have many of those guys. I think for the most part we're done, although we wouldn't eliminate discussion on anybody or anything."

The Steelers lost receiver Antwaan Randle El, defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen and safety Chris Hope as free agents. Haynes makes eight they will have signed, including cornerback Deshea Townsend, quarterback Charlie Batch, defensive end Brett Keisel, tight end Jerame Tuman, linebacker Clint Kriewaldt, tackle Barrett Brooks and receiver Lee Mays.

They also signed safety Ryan Clark of the Redskins and defensive end Rodney Bailey of the Seahawks, and restructured the deals of center Jeff Hartings and his backup Chukky Okobi.

"I think numbers-wise we were satisfied," Rooney said. "We went into it wanting to keep as many of those guys as we could and we were able to do so. We're still trying to get Quincy. I think we're going to come out of it about as well as you can expect."

The Steelers have two restricted free agents, cornerback Ike Taylor and special teams player Sean Morey.

Haynes said he got a call from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, his roommate on the road, encouraging him to stay.

"Ben called me and he said 'I got off the phone with coach [Cowher] and he wants you to stay and I want you to stay,' " Haynes said. "Knowing that you're wanted makes you feel good."
