Steelers, RB Haynes near deal
Expect him to sign before Sunday
Friday, March 24, 2006

The Steelers are close to re-signing running back Verron Haynes, the last of their key unrestricted free agents, and could have the deal completed before team management leaves for the start of the NFL owners meetings Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

Haynes, a fifth-round pick in 2002 who earned $659,520 last season, is the team's third-down back and backup fullback, in addition to being a top special-teams player. He did not reach contract settlement earlier because he wanted to test his value on the free-agent market. But the Steelers wanted to re-sign him because he is their best third-down back and the No. 3 back behind Willie Parker and Duce Staley.

Haynes had 274 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 74 carries and also caught 11 passes for 113 yards last season, but his value was underscored when the Steelers were 0-2 in games in which he was deactivated and Staley was used as the third-down back. The Steelers won eight consecutive games, including the Super Bowl, when Haynes returned to his usual role.
