When your opponent shoots 75 percent from the field in a game, you have about two options -- hope and pray. Neither worked for Lakeview last night.
Greensburg Central Catholic (30-1) made 30 of 40 field-goal attempts, as the WPIAL champion Centurions cruised to a 69-48 victory against District 10 runner-up Lakeview (24-6) in a PIAA Class AA girls' quarterfinal at North Allegheny High School. It was the second consecutive season the Centurions eliminated Lakeview in the quarterfinals.
The Centurions advance to play Westmont Hilltop, a 68-43 winner against Sharon, in the semifinal Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.
Last night, Greensburg Central junior guard Kayla Marghella was just as comfortable playing the lead role as a bit part. Marghella, usually the Centurions' third or fourth option, scored a team-high 19 points. Maggie Gibson had 17 for Greensburg Central, and Lakeview's potent guard, junior Sheena Aden, had 32.
Funny thing is, Lakeview sustained the 21-point loss even as the Sailors halted the Centurions' most potent player, junior Ashley Henderson. The Pitt recruit came into the contest averaging 21 points in the past four games, but was held to six.
"I wanted to take Henderson out of the game because their offense really runs through her," Lakeview coach Steve Aden said. "They had other weapons, though, and those other girls stepped up."
The reason being is that Greensburg Central remained patient on offense.
"I think our patience has been the big key for us this year," Greensburg Central coach Ed Pultz said. "Compared to last year and some other years, our patience has really, really impressed me this season. We're willing to move the ball around and wait for that good shot."
