Clairton

The general construction contract for a new Penn Hills library was awarded Monday to a Clairton company.

The contract went to low bidder DeMarco Construction Co., of Clairton, in the amount of $4.2 million. The total includes the general construction contract for the building plus an outdoor amphitheater and a pathway between the new library at Saltsburg and Stotler roads and Linton Middle School.

Also awarded were contracts for heating and air conditioning and fire protection for the new building. Those contracts went to R&B Mechanical, Pittsburgh, for $344,000, and J&J Fire Protection Co., Butler, for $61,160. Plumbing and electrical contracts are expected to be awarded this month.

Elizabeth Borough

If you want to be a star, you should start at the town's Grand Theatre.

Sign-ups for Children's Theatre classes for those age 9 to 17 will take place at the theater, at 207 Second Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon March 18. Classes are held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.

A basic acting class will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, March 22 through April 26. The curriculum includes script reading, acting, voice techniques, stage movement and improvisation. The final class will be a stage performance.

An acting for the camera class will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, March 23 through April 27. Students will learn how to audition, perform a commercial and act out scenes on camera. Graduating class is a screening of students' work.

The theater is hosting a special Stoogefest where fans of the Three Stooges can see those movies again.

Don't Be a Fool on April 1 -- Be a Stooge will showcase five favorite Stooge film shorts on the big screen. Audience members are encouraged to dress up like their favorite Stooge. Admission is $2.

Elizabeth Township

Saint Michael Church, 101 McLay Drive, is holding fish dinners from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday of Lent, except Good Friday, in Archangel Hall.

McKeesport

The National Rifle Association's Refuse to Be A Victim program will conduct a crime prevention seminar at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Penn State McKeesport campus, 4000 University Drive.

The seminar will teach how to avoid dangerous situations and prevent criminal confrontations in home, car, travel and personal, security-related scenarios.

McKeesport Little Theater Juniors are holding auditions for the upcoming production of "Bugsy Malone" from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the theater, 1614 Coursin St.

Young actors age 9 to 18 are needed and must do cold readings and 16 bars of musical theater music.

Steel Valley

The district's Barrett Elementary School will be featured on WQED's "OnQ" for a celebration of National Education Association's Read Across America Day.

The show will air at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. today and 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Luanne Szczpinski, Barrett Elementary media specialist, said several first-grade pupils were interviewed. Camera shots were taken in fourth-grade teacher Cynthia Kortz's classroom.

NEA's Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in the community to celebrate reading on or around Dr. Seuss' birthday.
