Lemieux has procedure to control heartbeat
Monday, February 27, 2006

Mario Lemieux, the Penguins' primary owner, had a procedure today to correct the heart problem that led to his retirement as a player last month.

The procedure, called ablation, was intended to eliminate the need for Lemieux to take medication to control an irregular heartbeat.

Team officials said he is resting comfortably and will be released from the hospital tomorrow.

When he announced his retirement, Lemieux said he was seriously considering the procedure, which he said would require him to be on blood thinners for about a month before the procedure and for about two months after it.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
