Ask LaMont: Revolving door etiquette
Sunday, February 26, 2006

Ask LaMont your own style and fashion question.

Q: I always open doors for women, but I'm not sure what to do with revolving doors. Should I go first or let her, or does it matter?

-- JAMES McDANIEL, Oakland

A: Thanks for a question that lets doubters know that chivalry isn't dead. If the revolving door is moving, let her go first and enter the section after her, pushing enough to keep the door moving so that she doesn't have to. But if you're at a revolving door that isn't moving, enter first and push, taking care not too push so fast that you cause her difficulty.

On the topic of moving transports, always hold an elevator door open while allowing women to enter and exit before you do. On an escalator, stand a step behind her going up and a step in front when going down to help prevent her possibly losing balance and falling .
