A 16-year-old student was shot twice moments after he was dropped off at Westinghouse High School in Homewood this morning.
The unidentified boy was hit in the right buttocks and leg. Other shots hit the Monticello Street side of the school, said Pittsburgh schools police Chief Robert Fadzen.
The sophomore was dropped off around 7:45 a.m. and someone in a car that pulled in just behind his opened fire. A school security officer pulled the victim inside.
City police said the shooting, in which an assault-style rifle was used, was not considered random.
The school was placed in "modified lockdown," with extra monitors in the hall and extra city and school police patrols outside.
Students were informed of the situation during an assembly, and those who had permission from parents were being allowed to leave.
Police late this afternoon were examining a small Chrysler found in Homewood which may have been used by the shooter.
More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
